A free screen reader for the visually impaired.
NVDA was reviewed by Horia Petrovanu
NVDA, also known as Non-Visual Access for Desktop, is a free screen reader for the visually impaired.
Screen readers allow you to transcribe with any human element any element that contains interpretable information. The voice synthesizer is operational immediately, even during the installation process, providing information through a synthetic voice to the blind or partially blind to access a computer at no additional cost.
NVDA is a valuable aid to many blind people on a daily, professional, educational or personal level. You can control what is read only by moving the cursor over the elements and text boxes using a mouse or arrows on the keyboard. The software is capable of interpreting and reading a large number of different formats and interfaces and allows you to write Word documents, create Excel spreadsheets and even work with command line programs. NVDA can convert text to Braille using a Braille display.
It also allows blind people to be able to communicate with loved ones, providing access to social networks, facilitating reading the press, managing banking services or online shopping.
From the technical specifications it appears that, NVDA uses a read engine, programmed in Python and is equipped with the free synthesizer first developed for Unix and then ported to Windows.
In conclusion, NVDA manages to synthesize a large amount of information through a synthetic voice and / or Braille, and thus allows visually impaired people to access a computer.
+ NVDA has been in our software catalog since Dec 17.2016.
+ The current version is 2020.3 and has been updated to Oct 23.2020.
