jEdit is a open-source multi-language programmers editor and development environment. Coded in Java, its a fine example of a Java desktop tool that looks good, is packed full of useful functionality and has snappy response times.
Text editing is a task that just about every technical computer user must face routinely. Whether youre a coder, a Web developer, a system administrator or just about any other kind of techie, chances are you will find yourself editing a piece of code, a page of markup or a configuration file sometime today. If youre not perfectly content with your current text editor, jEdit is an alternative that might be worth considering.
Keyboard shortcuts are an important part of every text editor, and here, too, jEdit doesnt disappoint. Shortcuts are shown right next to menu items, so its easy to learn the one for your favorite operations. You can also customize shortcuts and add new ones: The powerful Options dialog includes a search box that lets you instantly find the command you wish to bind.
jEdit is being coded in Java means that it is platform independent, and can run on any platform that has a run-time environment, from Windows, Linux, BSD, Solaris to VMS, OS2 and Mac OSX.
jEdit beats many expensive development tools for features and ease of use, it is released as free software with full source code, provided under the terms of the GPL 2.0.
Im using jEdit for every text-edit tasks I have simply because: 1) Its so versatile 2) (relatively) easy to adjust to ones needs 3) Powerful due to its plugins 4) fast (enough) on a descent system 5) Usable on each OS I care for: macOS, Linux, (sometimes) WinDOS and even Solaris (back in those days...)
