There are a lot of Linux operating systems available for the Raspberry Pi. The official Raspberry Pi operating system, formerly known as Raspbian, Ubuntu, Manjaro and many more offers desktop possibilities for the Raspberry Pi.

But the best part of Linux distributions is their customization. With Linux distributions, you can configure different desktop environments and customize the look of your operating system. With the Twister operating system for the Raspberry Pi, you can easily switch between Windows 10 and macOS environments.

Designed for the Raspberry Pi, the Twister operating system offers a number of alternative desktop themes, mimicking Windows and MacOS.

1. What is Twister OS?

A successor to Raspbian XP and other Pi-themed operating systems, Twister OS is based on Raspberry Pi OS and integrates the Xfce desktop environment.

This makes it possible to find a selection of pre-installed desktop themes on this system, inspired by Windows operating systems - Windows 95, XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Mac - iRaspbian.

The Twister operating system also includes an administration utility, an overclocking tool, pre-installed multimedia software and RetroPie.

2. How to install Twister OS on SD card

To install the Twister operating system, first download .img.

After downloading, the .img image will need to be extracted from the compressed XZ file. If you are using a Windows desktop computer, you can unzip it with 7-Zip. You will need a card writing tool such as BalenaEtcher.

Installing the Twister operating system on the Raspberry Pi is as easy as installing any other operating system:

* Insert a microSD card into your computer
* Launch the WhaleEtcher
* Select the ISO or IMG file - Twister OS
* Select the microSD card
* Click Flash to write the image
Wait for the end, then safely remove the microSD card from the computers card reader.

3. Operating system overview

When you turn on the Raspberry Pi, you will see Twister OS for the first time.

Based on the Raspberry Pi operating system, it comes with all the same tools pre-installed, but also offers some improvements. There is the Commander Pi tool for overclocking, the Kodi media library player and even a tool for remote access to your Android device. A version of Chromium, optimized for Netflix and HBOGO, is included, and you'll also find RetroPie.

There is also a system administration tool, PiKISS which is a utility that simplifies software installation on the Raspberry Pi. It makes it possible to simplify the installation of the software and requires little intervention from us.

And then there's ThemeTwister. This is the essence of the Twister operating system and you will find the icon to launch it on your desktop.

4. Some actions on the system

$ sudo apt full-upgrade
$ sudo apt purge bluealsa
$ sudo apt autoremove
$ sudo reboot

5. The Raspberry Pi can look like a Windows PC or a Mac

ThemeTwister is easy to use and has a simple menu to select a new look for your Twister operating system desktop. After restarting, the new layout applies.

For example, you can add a Windows-style look to your Raspberry Pi, and each new theme requires a restart, so press Enter when prompted to confirm your choice.

Once the new look is applied, you can consider installing new appropriate software. For example, with a Raspbian 95 or RaspbianXP look, you can add games to DOSBox. You will then be able to enjoy retro game action in a DOS window emulated by Windows.

RaspbianXP's Windows XP style presents realistic tools for toolbar buttons.

Two MacOS-inspired themes are included with Twister OS. iRaspbian-Light and iRaspbian-Dark do exactly what we'd expect, delivering a docking macOS visual style.

As with the Windows operating system, considerable detail has been applied to Mac systems to create the most realistic MacOS experience possible.

6. Other possibilities with Twister OS

This system offers a lot of entertainment and productivity options. Compared to the classic Raspberry Pi operating system, Twister OS is a system that benefits from pre-installed software. Below is a list of tools available in the Twister operating system:

* Overclocking tools,
* Retro games preinstalled,
* Current pre-installed games, from Minecraft Pi to CS2D, a 2D version of Counter-Strike,
* Code, VLC,
* LibreOffice office suite,
* GIMP,
* ThonnyIDE,
* Wine,
* and more

If you are missing some programs, you may be installing more from one terminal or using PiKISS automated scripts to install everything else, including software to run some of the best Raspberry Pi projects.
