How to install Apache OpenOffice on Ubuntu

1. Uninstall LibreOffice

You need to uninstall LibreOffice first, because you cannot install openOffice on Linux.

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge libreoffice*
$ sudo apt clean
$ sudo apt-get autoremove

2. Install Java on Ubuntu | Debian

It is important to check if Java is installed on your system. You can check by running the command:

$ java -version
If Java is not installed on the operating system, then you can install it by running the command:

$ sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install default-jdk

3. Download and install OpenOffice

You can download the latest version of OpenOffice from our website

Download Apache OpenOffice for Windows
Download Apache OpenOffice for Mac
Download Apache OpenOffice for Linux (.deb)

After the download is complete, unpack the .tar.gz archive and extract the files.

Open the folders until you reach the / DEBS folder created after extraction and run the installer for Apache OpenOffice on Ubuntu.

$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

4. Install the Desktop integration package

Finally you need to install the desktop package, which is located in the desktop-integration folder, and follow the command from the terminal.

$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Now you are done with the installation part and it is time to start using Apache OpenOffice. Search for OpenOffice in Show Applications and launch it.
